The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Malaysia, in collaboration with the Malaysia-Sri Lanka Business Council (MSLBC), hosted a Tamil Thai Pongal Celebration at the High Commission premises on 14th January 2024. The event symbolized hope and prosperity for the new year through the traditional boiling of milk, a ritual deeply rooted in Tamil culture.
As a multicultural nation, Sri Lanka treasures festivals like Thai Pongal, which embody unity and diversity. Highlighting the occasion’s significance, a message from the Hon. Vijitha Herath, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, was read out, emphasizing the festival’s role in fostering harmony, inclusivity, and growth. Acting High Commissioner Mr. M.I. Mohamed Rizvi reaffirmed the Mission’s commitment to initiatives such as the “Clean Sri Lanka” campaign, underscoring the importance of sustainable practices and development.
The celebration brought together High Commission staff, members of the MSLBC, and visitors, creating a shared moment of cultural pride and joy. Guests relished authentic Sri Lankan Pongal treats, adding a festive touch to the occasion. The High Commission continues to play a pivotal role in promoting Sri Lanka’s rich cultural legacy abroad, fostering stronger connections with the community in Malaysia.
