The High Commission of Sri Lanka together with the Buddhist MahaVihara, one of the oldest Templeswith a rich history over 125 years will be organizing the International Vesak Celebrations which will be held at Buddhist MahaVihara, Brickfields from 26th May to 1st June 2018. The Government of Sri Lanka celebrating 60 years of Diplomatic Relations with Malaysia has presented 60 ft colourfully eliminated VesakPandol which contains 35,000 lights/bulbs depicting “Kundalakesi” and also a Sri Lankan Cultural Troupe to perform at the Celebrations from 26th – 1st June 2018.
Over 100,000 devotees are expected to participate at the International Vesak Day Celebrations at the Buddhist MahaVihara. His Excellency A. J. M. Muzammil, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka will declare open the VesakPandolon Saturday, 26th May 2018 at 8.30 p.m.
Vesak Celebrations which the United Nations recognised as aDay of Observance in 1999, mark the Birth, Enlightenment and the Parinirvana of the Lord Buddha, is commemorated by Buddhist all over the world.
The International Vesak Celebrations will also take place at Temples in the cities of Taiping,Ipoh, Melaka and Penang.The first Sri Lankan Buddhist Temple was built in 1989 in Taiping followed by Buddhist MahaVihara in Kuala Lumpur (1894), Mahindarama Buddhist Temple in Penang (1914) and Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple in Sentul (1931)
