The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Malaysia, in collaboration with the All-Student Union of Sri Lankans in Malaysia, proudly hosted a vibrant Sinhala-Tamil New Year (Avurudu) celebration on 27 April 2025 at the High Commission premises in Kuala Lumpur. The event aimed to provide a meaningful platform for Sri Lankan students studying in Malaysian universities to embrace and express their rich cultural heritage for the next generation. This joyous occasion brought together the diverse Sri Lankan community in Malaysia, fostering unity and pride through tradition, dance, and festive spirit.
The celebration was graced by the presence of representatives from key Sri Lankan organizations in Malaysia, including the Federation of Malaysian Sri Lankan Organizations (FOMSO), the Malaysian Sinhalese Association, the Malaysia Sri Lankan Business Council (MSLBC), and the Sri Lankan Muslim Professionals and Business Association (SLAMP). Over 150 Sri Lankan students representing over 5,000 Sri Lankan students in Malaysia participated enthusiastically in the day’s activities. The programme commenced with the Sri Lankan National Anthem, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the oil lamp and the traditional boiling of milk—symbolising prosperity, happiness, and new beginnings. The audience was then captivated by colourful Sinhala and Tamil cultural dance performances, which set the tone for a lively and heartwarming celebration.
A series of traditional Avurudu games added to the festive cheer, including Kana Mutti (Clay Pot Breaking), Banis Kema, Lime and Spoon Race, Blow the Balloon, Three-Legged Race, Sack Race, Aliyata Aha Thiyenawa (Pin the Eye on the Elephant), Tug of War, Musical Chair, and the crowning of Avurudu Kumara and Kumari. The Acting High Commissioner Mr. M.I. Mohamed Rizvi warmly greeted all participants and presented prizes to the winners, extending heartfelt New Year wishes. Guests were also treated to an authentic array of Sri Lankan delicacies, bringing a true taste of home to the diaspora.
The High Commission expresses sincere appreciation to the volunteers, including those from APU Union, KL Mobile (event manager), and Ideamoney Productions (photography) for their invaluable support in making the Avurudu/New Year Celebration a memorable success.
