High Commissioner Air Chief Marshal (Rtd.) Sumangala Dias met with His Excellency Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr.) Johari bin Abdul, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malaysia on 9 September 2024, at the Malaysian Parliament. The courtesy meeting provided an opportunity for the High Commissioner to update His Excellency on significant developments in Sri Lanka and discuss areas of mutual interest between the two nations.

During the meeting, High Commissioner Dias highlighted the positive strides Sri Lanka has made under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. He detailed the country’s economic recovery efforts and progress, emphasizing the robust measures implemented by the Sri Lankan government to stabilize and grow the economy. Additionally, he provided an update on the reconciliation efforts in Sri Lanka, showcasing the government’s commitments to various priority actions and reforms.

His Excellency Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr.) Johari expressed keen interest in strengthening parliamentary ties between Malaysia and Sri Lanka, also agreed to initiate the establishment of the first South Asia Parliamentary Friendship Group, which will facilitate enhanced cooperation and exchanges between legislators from both nations. This initiative aims to foster deeper understanding and collaborative efforts in parliamentary practices and bilateral relations.

High Commissioner Dias also discussed potential areas for economic collaboration, and requested increased employment opportunities for Sri Lankan skilled and semi-skilled workers in Malaysia, emphasizing the mutual benefits of such opportunities. Furthermore, the High Commissioner invited Malaysian investors to explore investment opportunities in Sri Lanka, particularly in the Colombo Port City project, which offers significant prospects for development and growth.

Additionally, the High Commissioner sought assistance in facilitating the transfer of Sri Lankan prisoners under the judicial system, aiming to address humanitarian concerns and ensure fair treatment for those involved.
