The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Malaysia had the honor of engaging with the Hon. Mayor of Ipoh, Datuk Rumaizi bin Baharin on 22 November 2024 at the Ipoh City Council. Representing the High Commission, Actg. Deputy High Commissioner Mohamed Rizvi discussed avenues to strengthen cooperation between Sri Lanka and the Ipoh region, focusing on agriculture, tourism promotion, and city-to-city collaboration for capacity building.
Ipoh, the capital of Perak state, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant food scene, and picturesque limestone hills, making it a key tourism hub in Malaysia. As a major contributor to Malaysia’s economy, Ipoh’s thriving agricultural sector—notably in palm oil and rubber—along with its growing manufacturing and service industries, play a pivotal role. Its infrastructure further establishes it as a center for trade and investment.
Discussions highlighted shared opportunities in agriculture to exchange best practices, enhance technological expertise, and promote sustainable farming methods. Tourism also emerged as a focal area, with both parties emphasizing the value of promoting cultural and experiential tourism to boost economic growth and foster people-to-people connections. Dato Kamil Shafie, Chairman of Tourism Perak, Dato Hariri, City Counsellor, and business community members including Mr. Subain Singam, Mr. Cyrus Loh, and Mr. Indran also participated in the discussion. The meeting concluded on a positive note, with a commitment to pursue these initiatives and deepen ties between Sri Lanka and Ipoh through actionable outcomes.
